Jim, One night, Clyde (BN) ran short of power for the way freight to
Galesburg. Either #593 or #597 and Roundhouse Foreman Fred Colsby
decided to run 2 E-9's to Galesburg. The big problem was indeed the cab
heat since the boilers were out of service and this was the sole source
of heat. We were anxious to get these engines as they were bound to
run a bit faster than the SD-7's and 9's we had been getting. At about
11:30 PM, some eastbound freight power showed up and thats the power we
dragged home with. That was about as close as we got. Those same E's
were eventually used as hump engines at the Cicero hump until they blew
up. The only thing I can think of, that would be a sadder picture, is
using an E unit to shuttle tie cars at Galesburg's tie plant? Bill
