BN used both CB&Q and GN E7's in freight service
between Lincoln and Omaha in 1970/1971. For the
next few years they were replaced by displaced GN
and NP passenger F's.

The last group of E8's that went into Suburban service
were used in transfer service in the Chicago area.
Usually together but at times MUed with SW10's.

You are correct that they were not usable in this service
in winter as they did use steam heat.

There was a Freight train in the regular cycle, #14 from
Omaha to 14th Street. Train handled both carload and TOFC
meat traffic. This balanced out the pattern of movement
as #29 was a Westbound only Mail train. Yes, #14 did have
a schedule in the timetable but was normally run as an
extra so it did not have to conform to times that might
be unrealistic.

The Q's E9's were used in Chicago Commuter service.
Later they were rebuilt by MK for continued commuter
  service.

To my knowledge, the E9's never were used in freight.
But I heard that maybe some of the E8's and/or E7's
did see freight service. However when the late fall
came and heat for the cab was needed they were parked
since it meant firing up the boilers.
