My Great Grandmother (Bridget Brown) and her brother John Brown settled a
few miles east of Cameron, MO. Between Cameron and Kidder, MO. He was from
Ireland and settled near Cameron because other friends from Ireland had told
him
how nice the area was.
There was a water tower along the tracks of the Hannibal & St. Joseph at the
the bottom of the gentle sloping grade there. My Uncle told me how my Great
Uncle would plow the fields with a team of horses, and when he would hear the
whistle of an approaching train, he would rest the team and go down to water
tower to supply water to the train at the edge of the farm property.
When I first went to the farm as a child, I would wait up to watch the lights
of the St. Joseph connection of the "American Royal Zephyr" to pass along the
same right of way decades later. I could see it from the porch or from the
bed on the top floor of th farm house. Great memories!
