Just an update for all of our friends in the BRHS.
The past 2 Saturdays have seen a lot of work done to get the roof closer
to being restored. Saturday July 20 scaffolding was erected at the west
end of the building and the spanish clay tile was removed from the roof.
Tile is being brought to the ground while we make repairs to toe
original roof decking and then apply a new layer of 1/2" plywood over
the entire surface to give us a good nailing surface for the copper
nails that hold the tile. There are 2 copper nails in the upper left
cornere of each tile.
Today Saturday July 27 found us setting up scaffolding around the rest
of the rooflinf of the building in the rail in the morning..what
dedication!!! It finally stopped raining so the tile was removed from
the east end of the depot and the same repairs will be done to this end
as well as the rest of the roof. A firm from Belvidere Illinois,
Renaissance roofing who are specialists in tile, slate and metal roof
restorations will be putting the clay tile back on starting in late
August. It is expected to take about 30 days to complete and we will be
furnishing them with volunteers to assist in getting the tile back to
the roof.
We have about 30 some volunteers with usually 12 to 15 showing up to
work on the project. We will be working every Saturday on the roof
until it is complete sometime in late September.
If you would like to stop by for a look you are most welcome anytime.
If you have spare time to help with this very worthwhile
restoration..come on down on Saturday and we will put you to work. We
would be glad to have some new faces and what a great way to meet other
"Q" historians.
