True story from the mid 70s. Westbound up Waterman Hill on a rainy, cold
fall night,an mty boxcar derailed about no more than 10-12 cars ahead of the
w/c. Luckily it was at night,we were just crawling along and the sparks
gave "Double E" the bad news on his side. He asks me if I have sparks about
10 up on my side...nope. "Stop the train" goes out on the radio. Open the
back door of the w/c,look down and the answer is immediate. Walk up to find
one end of a 40 footer off the rails. Now what ? No frogs on w/c or engine.
We're on the mainline so the usual array of tie plates, angle
bars, lumber, ties, etc aren't around. The crew following came up and tied on to
the w/c and
we tried rerailing with whatever we could scrounge(rocks, ballast, pieces of
ties,etc)...no luck. The call goes out and a crew comes east with their
units from Shabbona with a frog after our head clears him. Now were in
business, find a few spikes, get a couple hammers and were ready to try again.
The
car just pushed the frog out of the way ?? So the calvary is called(the
mobile truck from Eola RIP) In less than 15 minutes with custom cut oak
blocks, frogs and spike mauls they have the car back on the rail. I recall we
had
the C&I closed from Aurora to Rochelle that night for a few hours. On the
other hand if that car had gone about another mile there would have been a
nice pile off RR equipment on BX crossing.
