Ryan,

East bound from Savanna to Chicago the ruling grade is Burke Hill. Most
often you would be starting out of Savanna from a dead stop(crew change)
though we often managed a version of the "step on/step off". Even from a
running
start trains would stall on Burke. Then you either doubled the hill or if
close behind the next trains units came up and pushed. Almost any of the
hills on the C&I could be a problem for an underpowered, overloaded, mechanical
troubled or wet weather effected train. I do recall being pushed up Oregon
westbound at least once and also doubling it. Seem to recall shoving up
Waterman westbound in a snow storm. Went up Sugar
Grove,Waterman,Lee,Oregon,Startford,Burke many,many times at less than a
walking pace. Even derailed
on Waterman westbound and we were moving so slowly we got stopped w/only one
car derailed.
The old timers would talk about how under steam power even Hazelhurst could
 be a doubling event.

Leo
