[CBQ] Rerailing

Just a generic quiz. Your working a w/f,yard job,road switcher or even a  
mainline semi hot shot and in the midst of doing your "station work" a car  
decides to go on the "ground", nothing too serious,you've got a pair of 
wheels  off the track but everything is upright and still coupled together. 
It's 
the  late 50's or after so there's no "frogs" on the engine or w/c.
How do you get the car back on the rails w/o calling the TM or agent ?  
Let's just say you don't want an official inquiry. 
There really are several tools at hand. No prize offered other  than old 
"stories" handed down.
 
Did you ever wonder why so many ties are scored around switches ?
