I am trying to figure out just why the Q went thru the expense of crossing the Illinois River twice to get to Streator. First they crossed the river at Ottawa with their Montgomery to Streator branch

Could I offer a guess why the two routes? In the time I lived along the "Q", I know that a lot of out the Streator branch to Chicago was the silica sand. My guess is it went to users in the Chicago a

Remember that the Q connected with the the NYC Kankakee Belt at two locations, Streator and Zearing, so traffic on the Montgomery-Streator line only had to go down to Streator to move to points east,

Steve, I do not think that either the AT&SF or currently the BNSF "Short Haul" themselves on anything. Both roads had/have concurrences with the NYC/PC/CR, and now the NS that any Chicago interchange
