I believe the model plates were a later development and were provided to the railroads by EMD as requested. The E's and F's originally did not have model plates. sjl Not positive about model plates,

I can't think of any "F" marker plates on CB&Q equipment. Some railroads used them (or cutout metal letters) but not many. I also think application of Builders Plates to B units was inconsistent...at
