I agree "N" North is to obvious. The engineer had better know which way hes train is going, without a signal I.D. to remind him. The "S" would be on the other signal, not on the backside of this one.

Cy better go look at the signals on line today, he'll see that both aspects are on the same signal pole, however, I'll give him credit for signals of that era, they were on different poles. The S and
