The CB&Q Waycar Book has some excellent photos of markers, including some close-up photos. Red was always to the rear, with green in the other three directions. Markers were fixed in one orientation,

Oil markers were before my time but I seem to remember reading something about a extra pulling into a siding to let a following superior train pass and turning the markers to show green to the rear.
