My guess would be around 1960 to the end of 1970. By the mid 1970's the railroads suffered losses due to rocks and such being thrown at the auto's on the top ot the rack. This of course led to the in

While in college after Vietnam I loaded/unloaded Chrysler cars at the Newark DE plant (my father in law ran the place). Penn Central of course had clearance issues and at least one car came in burned

I think it had something to do with the routes travelled...I saw auto-racks all they way up through 1980 or so on the K-line (I'm taking a guess on the years). Most of them did have side screens. How
