While I model the 1965 to Merger era, I think the posts up to this point as well as the following will clearly show that all models of Q E's were used on the EB. The following is a list of all EB power just from published book photos, and as you will see, everything was used. On October 22, 1965 the westbound EB had am E8A leading with three trailing E7A's, while a November 1965 combined NCL/EB had a four unit E8A/E9A set. A March 1965 EB had just a two unit back-to-back E8/9A set.

 

From web photos I show a back-to-back E8/9A set on the EB at Prairie du Chien on Sept 13, 1965. 

 

So I think you are fine prototypically with just about any combination of 2-5 Q E-units on the EB in your era when the E5's were even still running. That E8/9A-E5B-E7A lashup in the message photo from Phil Weibler proves my point. I almost want to expand my era back to 1961 for that lashup alone!
