Thread-topic: [CBQ] Signal Bridge - Was semaphore usage on the Q
Mike:

I will go ahead and answer your question regarding the signal bridge, since I have the reference readily available.  The October 1912 issue of "The Signal Engineer" contains the article on the Q signal bridges on pages 356 to 358.  There is a plan of the 3-track bridge on page 356.  The photo is on page 357.  This signal bridge design was requested by J. B. Latimer, who was the Q's Signal Engineer, and anticipated that 3-track and 4-track bridges would be needed for upcoming automatic signal installations.  Plans were also drawn up for a 2-track bridge which was similar in design.

The photo is at taken at Hinsdale, looking east, at the bridge at MP 17.27, which was (to be) at the west end of the Hinsdale interlocking installed as part of the automatic signal project in 1914 between LaVergne and Aurora.  If you can find the article on-line, and depending on the clarity of the photo, you can see that the signal bridge at MP 17.01 is not yet erected, but you can barely see that the bridge at MP 16.38 at Highlands is in place.  Bridges 17.27 and 17.01 have been gone for years, but bridge 16.38 lasted up until it was recently replaced by a modern bridge for PTC.

Mr. Holding, would you mind sharing the links to the articles you referred to?  I found the semaphore one but am having a heck of a time finding the signal bridge and searchlight articles.  Looked in google books and hathitrust.

Thanks, Mike Offerman
