Thomas:
I looked at some information that was published in The Signal Engineer, a periodical that was published for railroad signal departments starting in about 1907. CB&Q had semaphores from a number of signal manufacturers (Union Switch and Signal, GRS, etc), but
it appears that from about 1914 or so, the majority of their automatic block semaphores were purchased from the Federal Signal Company. These semaphores were 60 degree, lower quadrant, two position semaphores referred to as "top mast" semaphores, because
the motor was at the location of the blade at the top of the signal (as opposed to being located at the base).
The vast majority of these semaphores were used in "home" and "distant" signal" installations, since the semaphores had only two positions, and therefore could display only two aspects. Blades were made of enameled steel, and "home' blades were painted red
with a square end and a straight white stripe near the end. "Distant" blades had a forked end with a forked white stripe near the end. It appears that the earliest "distant" blades were painted green, but this color was fairly quickly changed to yellow.
The blades appear to be painted black on the reverse side.
I'm sure I read somewhere that the Federal Signal Company was bought out by one of the other larger companies in the mid 1920's, but I can't find that reference.
I don't know much about the blades used on train order signals, except to say the some of the first ones had wooden blades, which I think they started changing to steel in about 1910 or so.

Subject: [CBQ] Semaphore usage on the Q
Hey everyone. Wanted to check in to see if anyone had any good info on semaphore usage on the Q? Looking for info on the particular type/manufacturer and blade coloring/shape for them. Also would be good to know train order board types.
I am into the FreeMo modeling and planning to build some modules using Semaphores.
If this information is in any of the Q bulletins, please let me know.
Thanks in advance.
