Thread-topic: [CBQ] types of gallery cars
James:

I can't answer all of your question about 1988.  In the notes I took, I was more interested in the CB&Q era and car dimensions.  I did not pay attention to non-CB&Q lettering.  I do have photos from 1984,1985 and 1990, and my comments regarding 1988 are based on those.

In 1984, the "BURLINGTON" letters had been removed from the letterboard and the BLACK BN herald existed, along with the round BLACK RTA circular emblem.  My photos from 1985 indicate that the underbody and trucks were re-painted BLACK on all cars, so the re-painting occurred sometime between the fall of 1984 and the fall of 1985.

In 1990, the BLACK BN herald had been replaced on all cars by the BLUE Metra herald.  The BLACK RTA circular emblem still existed.  The underbody and trucks were still painted BLACK.  If you model 1988, you may need either herald, I don't know.  BUT, you will need BLACK underbodies and trucks.

Some other comments (and others have pointed out some of these): Re: Rapido BN cars early 70's - mid 80's:  #728 DID have a toilet but had vertical grab irons on the car sides at the ends, #746 did NOT have a toilet, and #802 had no former 'BURLINGTON' letterboard.  Therefore, to get the 3-car pack with the correct control car (791), you will get two trailers that both contain errors.

Re: Rapido METRA era cars with name boards:  I'm pretty sure that the 'BURLINGTON" and BNSF RAILWAY' lettering is specific to former groups of cars.  This re-lettering is fairly recent, and someone else may have better information, but I think the 'BURLINGTON' is specific to #750-759, and 'BNSF RAILWAY' is specific to #760-787.  Trailers #700-749 never got this lettering, and in fact may have been traded away before the lettering was applied.  None of the former CB&Q control cars (790-795) got this lettering, and their cab side windows had been plated over (all of the Rapido METRA era control cars are BN era cars and had no name board).

Re: Rapido Painted, Unlettered cars:  these cars should still have the small plate for the car numbers.

David and Glen Haug,

While not specifically related to this group, I am modeling strictly 1988, how were the Gallery Cars lettered at this point in time? Was it the large Black BN Logo on the large panel to the lower left end of the car, was it the combination of Metra and BN Logo's on either side of the doors, was it something else, or a combination of them all?

Regards

James

I was the one who started this thread back in October.

Specific issues I see with this announcement:

-BN coach 746 would not have a toilet

-Nothing higher than 795 should have a nameboard

-For more realism, the nameboards should be mixed BURLINGTON and BNSF RAILWAY. I heard Clayton Johanson(sp?) (the BNSF manager who ordered the lettering to be put on) speak about this and I think he said only ten cars have BURLINGTON. I'd suggest selling sets of two BNSFs and one BURLINGTON, or one of each with a no-name cab car.

-Research should be done into when the lettering was added vs. when the cabs were blanked out (keeping in mind that the current fleet has no blanked cabs with nameboards).

-If memory serves, they've left out an era when there was a green and black BN logo to the right of the doors.

To recall my youth (and save money), I'd go for the BN era. Unfortunately, neither of the 3-car sets is accurate. One set has 746 with a toilet; the other has 802 with a nameboard.

I hope they can be persuaded to change the numbers to be more accurate before they go into full production. I'd also like to see the cars with no nameboards offered with lettering and numbers. The cabs should be numbered 796-815 and the coaches 816-820.

I'll send the product designer a message regarding the letterboards on the 802/803. I didn't get looped in until late in the process and didn't see the designs, I just passed along Glen's comprehensive notes on the cars. There are errors on the BN3 E9 as well.

Ah, thanks for the reminder on the HEP--"I knew that".

Because I'm very fond of those BN E's, I expect to pick up one loco and maybe six cars.  Kinda like the cab cars too, with their stripes.

When the Q cars come, I'm right now thinking only two cars, as then I think I can skip the power car on the end.  Happily, I'm doing quite nicely on Q E's.

I model a long ways from Chicago, so these purchases are just for fun.
