I did almost the same trip in 2001-2002 (over the New Year), except by that time it was Superliners. Still a wonderful ride that I would do again. Going that direction provided a same day connection from Southwest Chief to Coast Starlight and provided daylight
views of the California Coast. However, we crossed Cajon Pass and descended the Front Range in darkness. If I ever get to do it again, I will reverse the loop.
Not the original CZ, but the Superliners are nice, even if you can't see straight ahead from the lounge. I never saw the Feather River Canyon but Donner Pass was beautiful, buried in lots of fresh snow.

I did almost the same trip in 1984. Yes, it was Amtrak, but IIRC on the Southwest Chief I rode an El Cap coach. Side trip (on Amfleet) to San Diego. And of course the Coast Starlight went to Oakland. I'm not sure what station Amtrak was using in Oakland
then, but it was before they moved to Jack London Square. The roughest ride of the whole trip was from Denver back to Chicago. 🙁 To tell the truth, I think I enjoyed more riding pre-HEP eastern trains in the late 70s.
