I did almost the same trip in 1984. Yes, it was Amtrak, but IIRC
on the Southwest Chief I rode an El Cap coach. Side trip (on
Amfleet) to San Diego. And of course the Coast Starlight went to
Oakland. I'm not sure what station Amtrak was using in Oakland
then, but it was before they moved to Jack London Square. The
roughest ride of the whole trip was from Denver back to Chicago.
🙁 To tell the truth, I think I enjoyed more riding pre-HEP
