3/69 to approximately 1973, Erie Lackawanna run through from Coxton, NJ to St. Paul.  Sometimes CB&Q and later BN power got turned back at Marion, OH but also often ran all the way to NJ.  On CB&Q, EL power usually went west on train 97.

In the late 1960s, CB&Q had some NP F3s on lease that were frequently seen on the river line.

New GN and NP locomotives from EMD and GE headed west for delivery via CB&Q.

There is some indication that GN power was borrowed on a per-trip basis when power was needed.  Photos exist of GE U28B and U25Bs as well as GP30s, GP35s, SD45s and F45s in the Chicago area dated before the merger in the late 1960s.

Tim,

This is great info and I will update some as follows:

EL power I have photographically confirmed are EL C-425 2458, GP35 2572. SD45’s 3614, 3620, U33C 3315, and SDP45’s number unknown. There is a photo of a pair of EL SDP45's with a trailing UP U50 in Olmstead's Trail of the Zephyrs book on the C&I! This is my favorite "non-Q" consist running on the Q, although there are other confirmed photos of Q trains with no Q units.

The confirmed NP F3 units were F3A 6003D and F3B 6003C, and F3B 6005C. I am quite certain there was another F3A, which I assume to be 6005D, but cannot confirm the number.

New GN, NP and SP&S units were indeed shipped on the Q, EMD's direct from La Grange, GE's coming over from Erie, and Alco's coming from Schenectady. The problem is that many of these units were shipped in the locomotive consist, but were DIT - Dead-In-Train - somewhere back in the train, sometime just before the caboose. Proven photographic examples of these DIT units include GN SDP40's and the SP&S C-636's in Mpls/StP. There are photos and even video of GN and NP U33C's being delivered on the Q to the GN and NP that are DIC (Dead-In-Consist) trailing units on Q train 97.

While not on the line Tim or I model, there is a photo in Spoor's Vol. 4 on pages 90-91 of two new SP SD45's trailing DIC (Dead-In-Consist) on their way through Galesburg and on to SP interchange.

As for running GN units, the only web one I have a definitive photo of is a GN U28B as the trailing unit on a Q train going east (compass south) through Savanna, IL. Here is the photo confirmation link from 6-15-1968: http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=2819786 I also have an eBay slide download clearly showing a GN F7A-B-A set going through Newport, MN. The only confirmed number is GN f7A 454-D, which became a BN unit after the merger, so this was not a set of F's being traded in to EMD. They were real working power on the train.

Tim - I would love to see the links photos of the other pre-merger GN units that you show in Chicago, even though it is going to cost me dearly! I have often wanted to run a BSB Genesis GN F45 on my layout, but with no photo evidence of anything but DIT delivery, I couldn't justify the cost. I do have a P2K GN U28B, though, clearly justified by the Savanna photo, and an Atlas BSB GN U33C being delivered DIC and justified in consist by the Emery Gulash photo and video I mentioned earlier.
