Jim:
Thank you so much for a very thorough assessment of shortcomings; this is quite helpful!
I was aware of Cannon 48" fans no longer being available, but the Plano grilles will be very helpful. Incidentally, regarding the handrails, I also noticed on the fireman's side that there should be two short/SEVEN long stanchions, and their factory plastic rails are two short/SIX long! Interesting...
Thanks again, and also for the photo/detail on the Bulletin!

Hello Chris: Here are some observations concerning GP30s as Q motors. The center fan over the radiators is about 4 inches taller than the 36 inch fans on earlier Geeps or F-units. It is also identical to the middle radiator fan on the early GP35s. As for replacement fans, Cannon made replacements but these have not been available for a while. Plano makes etched grills and fan blades that can enhance the original housings. I personally think that plastic handrails are the worst and almost any replacement stanchion with wire railings would be better. Also, Athearn makes a good Leslie S-2 horn in brass and a vastly improved replacement Blomberg truck side frame
I assume you are aware of BRHS bulletin #52 focussing on the Q GP30s. One error from said Bulletin, the second order of units, 970-977, had the rear sandfiller on the prow of the high hood, not below the right number board as on the P2K version. See enclosed photo for that detail. That should cover most mysteries the project could present up front! Jim Sandrin
Hello modelers! I have an original undec P2K GP30 which I plan on modeling/painting in CB&Q colors. Looking over the model last night, and comparing it to prototype units, I see a few changes needed to make it more accurate. However, the P2K fans are, in a word, "awful". So, a few questions if I may:
1) is the 36" center fan the same as would be used on, say, any other early Geep?
2) the 48" fans - is there a parts manufacturer who makes a fan that would be both a suitable and superior replacement?
Thanks for any guidance that can be offered. Not willing to accept the stock factory units as adequate.
Chris
