I have a sidebar comment regarding the Portland plant in St. Louis. Sometime in the '50s Portland built a conveyer from the plant to a terminal on the Mississippi River (I estimate a quarter mile long and totally under ground). I would see a barge being loaded almost every time I passed the plant. Later the process was reversed with cement being unloaded from a barge and moved to the back of the plant where it was loaded into trucks.
