About those elevators.  We had uniformed Negro operators, that were very proud of there job.  There was a trick to get the cable operated machines to line up with the floor you wanted.
When arriving for work with a packed  car was a challenge the trick was stop above the floor you wanted then slide down hoping to maybe line up with the car and floor kinda close.
Sometimes it took several tries to get the car to move eventually it did an all passengers kinda gave a grunt of thanks.. Tom Hammer
