thlanks Hol..you certainly are correct re Baldwin vs Alco.  As the years go by I suffer more and more from the  "THEY ALL LOOK ALIKE TO ME"  syndrome.  This  "quotation" was first uttered back in the 50's when a Senior member of the Lincoln Railfans Club  who was then just a bit younger than I am now   made that comment when the diesel engine became a prominent feature in any discussion of motive power on our beloved CB&Q.

I can't honestly say that I EVER saw an Alco out this way although I may have, but it surely would have made no significant impression on me as Being out of place"

Pete:

I believe those were Baldwin VO1000s on the St. Joe Division rather than Alcos -- 9350-9379 rather than 9300-9308.

Some of those Alcos found a home on the old St. Joe Division.  They worked Murray Yard at KC and also St. Joe yard and branch lines.  Also branch lines out of Red Oak...I have a photo of one of them at the Engine House at Villisca in December 1953 and distinct memories of seeing them working the yard at Red Oak...In fact Jim Christen and I saw one derail right in front of the depot at Red Oak at the track on the south side where the combines for the Hamburg branch were kept.  Jim and I had been hanging rund for some time and the foreman on the switch crew came over an accused us of "monkeying around with the switch.  Believe it or not in all my years of "hanging around and working for both the Q and the RI that was the first, last and only derailment that I saw actually take place.

Speaking of non-EMD/EMC diesels, did the Chicago-based Baldwin VO-1000’s that I see (in photos) used to haul passenger consists in and out of CUS ever stray much from that role?  I gather the VO-1000’s (whether in Chicago or elsewhere) were forced on the EMD/EMC-loving Q by wartime restrictions.

Looks like an EMD NW2, not an Alco, but a nice photo nonetheless.
It looks to me like the number is 9227 which would indeed make it an EMD NW2. Definitely not an Alco S-2.
