Dennis,

I would point interested parties to the BRHS web site, company store,Zephyrs, number 59 with article by yours truly entitled”An evening at Downers Grove”. Now is a great time to buy as the Zephyrs have been discounted to $1. Hurry before they are gone. I just bought two more copies myself.

The article contains photos, a track diagram of the Downers yard and descriptions of the nightly dinky switching.

Dennis - There are a number of such photos in the HCM Flickr Page that can be found in the members section of the BRHS web site - Louis

How about some photos both past and present for those modelers that would like to model the Downers Grove station and yard area? Or for them to have an understanding or idea on where these facilities were located and what exists there today? Very historic for the Q commuter operations!

Thanks- Dennis

Doug,

You saw remnants of the fourth main, you just didn’t realize it . The switch that is just east of Belmont on main 1 and then runs parallel to the main Eastward for a bit is the very last piece of what was the fourth main. The other section that lasted well into the 1970s was at Naperville that provided access to Krohlers Furniture (sp?).

Someday I’ll get around to writing the article for the BRHS Bulletin that’s entitled “The Best Laid plans of Men” about several sections of triple and quadruple mains that once existed in the Aurora division. Many for relatively short periods of time.

Thank you very much, Leo!

I wondered if CTC didn't have something to do with it.  In the period in which I grew up I am pretty sure the signaling (with searchlight signals) was ABS (I recall four "colors": green, yellow, flashing yellow, and red.)  So when I returned as an older adult CTC was operative.

I don't know why I kind of enjoyed seeing a train on the "wrong main" - it made it all more interesting.

I might add that the only evidence I saw of that fourth track was the very nice service roadway on the north side of the main line and (even more striking) the extra space to the north on the piers of the bridge over the West Branch of the DuPage River.
