Leo And Group - Here's a link to a Jordan Spreader web page that will answer some of your questions:

I wasn't aware of this, but Jordan Spreaders were constructed in Chicago.  The company continues on today under the HARSCO brand.

The web page includes rosters for Jordan Spreaders sold to railroads including the Q, C&S and FW&D.  The Q had a surprisingly, to me, large number of 19.  The C&S had two and the FW&D had one.  So, at least on Lines East and West, there were plenty of Jordan Spreaders to serve the various divisions. See attached.

Jordan Spreaders remain very versatile and durable machines to this day - Louis

Teds comments reminded me of another experience on a Jordan equipped with the high snow plow. In Jan 1979 our BN crew D.H. From our Aurora base to Mendota where we relieved crew that had been plowing the Denrock branch for 12 hours. The Asst Supt had been aboard with them the entire time. He joined us for the next 12 hours while we made two round trips Mendota-Denrock . We were then relieved by a third crew with whom the Asst Supt stayed.

For those of you who knew him,Joe Arrington was chain smoking those little cigarillos the whole time. In many spots the drifts were at or above window level on the SD.The reason for keeping the branch open was its’ ability to be a backup if things came undone on the C&I. One year later while in the Chicago regional office I learned the branch was under study for a abandonment.

Hi Nelson,

Don't be so fast assinging the Jordan to lines west. In the winter of 1979, on the Milwaukee, I was on a Jordan just like that model, clearing yard tracks of snow, in Bensenville yard, in the Chicago Terminal. We would clear 5 tracks, and cover one track till spring.

I am certain the Q/BN that winter was also useing its Jordan's on branch and secondary lines in Illinois.

In addition to Ken's comments on what is missing, the second smaller piston below the larger top piston for control of the blade is missing. The only other possible difference I can see is the presence/absence of an air horn. The Spoor book photo is taken from a low angle, so it's not possible to state for certain that the horn is present, but I think not. The photo of 203838 in the book was taken in 1965 in Denver, and the caption states that the high front snow plow made it capable of handling drifts 8 to 10 ft. high, so this model was indeed used for snow removal on Lines West.
