That large plow on the front wouldn’t be much use for leveling ballast. If it wasn’t for snow, what was it for?

These machines would be used system wide and more in the Summer, than the winter. Their main work was plowing ditches and leveling ballast.
Winter snows were only incidential work, and many years of not being used in the Winter.

I would guess most would be on Lines West, where the wide open spaces promoted drifting. Having been stranded in Western Nebraska this March due to closure
of I-80, I have a firsthand appreciation of the need for and importance of snow removal equipment. I trust the Q was better at it than Nebraska DOT.
A roster with assignment data would be helpful. Which reminds me, where is the eventually forthcoming MOW book? Or the Black Hills book, for that matter?
