Are you saying that Downers Grove had a water column on the main line. Unless it was very early on, I have never seen a photo of a main Line water column at DG. The only water column there was located on the engine service lead, just east of the turntable and adjacent to the suburban coach yard. The column and its water tank were approximately at the intersection of Oakwood Ave. and Warren Ave. A photo showing both the water tower and the water column is available in the BRHS website photo gallery. Search for 4-6-2 No. 2918. There, you will find a photo taken by my dad in the late 1930s showing the locomotive taking on water. I have seen many old photos of the Downers Grove depot area, both with the original depot and the later one and none include a main line water column. The tank at DG was mineral red. The water column, as I recall, was black.
I don’t know about Riverside, but there was a water column at the west end of the Aurora depot that served two mainline tracks. It continued to exist and was operational up through the fan trip era. In the steam era, water was available at the Western Ave, servicing facilities in Chicago, but that was off the main line.

As to water columns, yes there were some in suburban territory. Riverside had some between the mains East of Longcommon Road and of course at Downers Grove. Not sure about Naperville without doing research. Eola and Aurora had them early on as well. Can’t offhand think of a East End location with a tank spout but there probably were very early....just so few photos. Do you have drawings of tanks? Stay safe y’all... Charlie Vlk
