Louver coloration change based on sun angle is a very common phenomena in locomotive photography - not so bad with color slides (though definitely noticeable) but with a B&W negative I can see where it really can play havoc with the photo. A prime example is the eBay negative Rupert referenced. Remember, these are louvers, not just side vents. The metal is punched outward to form the louver so the angle of the metal is totally different from the vertical locomotive side and will reflect sunlight quite differently. That causes a color hue change on color slides (often times also better highlighting the louver arrangement) and a much lighter hue on a B&W negative.
