Peter - Perhaps, someone on this List will have a 1930s time table that they can scan to show Train No. 178's stops between Ottumwa and Galesburg. I would imagine that your great grand dad was its engineer 'tween Burlington and Galesburg and deadheaded back to Monmouth for his off time - Louis

Peter - Well, that makes a lot more sense. 178 was the train number. Although I have no images of Train No. 178,  I can share with you images of both 9770 and 2867 so you'll know what they looked like.

First, motor car 9770 is shown at DesMoines, IA, with two cars, one a storage mail car and the other a combination coach/mail car. The image is undated, but this is almost certainly what the 9970 and quite possibly its two car train all looked like when your great grand dad was its engineer on the East Ottumwa Division.

Second, 2867 is shown outside Chicago Union Station near the 14th Street Coach Yards with a two car "dinky" suburban train on September 2, 1948.  This is well after its days powering Train 178 on the East Ottumwa Division, but the locomotive is most likely unchanged with the exception of a large turbo-generator placed on top the boiler in front of the cab that was used to light the suburban coaches of that era.

Hope you find these two images of interest. Best Regards - Louis

I think I solved a riddle. I dug up one of my great grandfather's timesheets for 1935 and the Train Number was 178 and the Engines were #9770 and #2867.
