Dennis - I'm sure this Group has picked-up many new members since BB No. 14 was published in August 1985 who may not be aware of that treasure trove of information on Aeolus. Some of our youngest Group members may not have even been born by that date.
And for old timers like me who visited both 4000 in the Galesburg dead line and 4001 in the Lincoln dead line during the late 1950s as a teenager, your post has motivated me to locate my copy of BB No. 14 and reread the article. Thankfully, all this has been documented!
I'm attaching two images showing both the 4000 and 4001 under construction at West Burlington while having their shrouding applied. It's just like Hol recorded, a light steel framework to support the stainless steel sheathing. There is no Shotweld gear in sight - Louis

Burlington Bulletin No. 14, published in August 1985 is the complete treatise on the Aeolus.
Hol Wagner provides the complete history of how the engines were shrouded, stating that “a light structural steel framework was designed to serve as a support for the stainless steel sheathing and it was erected over the boiler, pilot and tender.
The framework was secured to the running boards of the locomotive and had no direct contact with the boiler itself. Stainless steel panels were attached to the framework using Shakeproof self-tapping screws rather than Budd’s patented Shotwelding process.”

I wonder if the two AEOLUS stainless steel sheathings required Shotwelding in fabrication….I would imagine so. The Shotweld units could be, IIRC, suspended from an overhead tackle that could be moved within reach of the work area so were not permanent installations so the Aurora shops might have loaned the equipment and experienced operators for the fabrication of the shrouds on the locomotive and tenders.

To the second question, since stainless steel diesels and passenger cars were being maintained by their own forces since 1934 why would their diesel and car shops not be able to maintain the E-5’s as part of their normal fleet maintenance operations?

Hi all,
Of course, now that the “definitive” work on the E5s has been printed, there are a couple of questions that have arisen.
The first is what was the reason (or reasons) for the Burlington removing the names from the E5 locomotives. If anyone has a definitive answer, please share it. There are a couple of theories, but nothing definitive. We know that when this was done, they simply flipped the name plates placing blank side out.
The second is when E5 body repairs were needed, did the West Burlington Shops have the shot welding equipment to do this, or did they have Budd representatives come and do the work? The other possible scenarios would be to have the units sent to Aurora, but did Aurora have the shot welding equipment, or did they have Budd representatives come and do the work?
Inquiring minds want to know.
