This won't answer your questions but the topic brings back memories of my late parents. Dad worked in the Aurora shops during World War II and was there when Silver Dome was constructed in '45. I wish he was around to ask about the E5's. When Dad was 14, he rode his bike downtown to watch the construction of the new Aurora station in the early 20's. My mother took her first train ride out of the old Aurora depot back in 1916. She greatly enjoyed train travel and went with me on countless trips on CB&Q and other trains. I've made frequent visits to the Illinois RR Museum at Union and am always thrilled to see the E5 and the Nebraska Zephyr equipment there. Verne Brummel, Fitchburg,WI

I checked and it was not in “Diesels West”. I don’t know when it was acquired but it certainly was in place when the Silver Alchemy was converted into the Silver Dome in 1945. I am not sure if the heavy wreck rebuilds of the shovelnose trains were done at Budd or Aurora prior to them getting it. Aurora certainly did have working with the Shotweld process down to factory standards soon after they got the machine. Charlie Vlk

Dave:
To the second question, since stainless steel diesels and passenger cars were being maintained by their own forces since 1934 why would their diesel and car shops not be able to maintain the E-5’s as part of their normal fleet maintenance operations?
Thanks- Dennis Popish
