Thanks for the information gentlemen. I still haven’t had any luck finding a lettering specification. A spec would be great. If they aren’t available does anyone know of a set of HO decals that are made for this type of car? I can scale up my stencils from there. Thanks, Greg
Hol thanks for the info---just what i was looking for----the Atlas N scale Hart Ballast car also has trucks painted mineral red---correct?

The trucks under all these CB&Q class MWB-14 composite (i.e., steel framed with wood sides) 70-ton ballast cars are National Steel Casting type B-1, designated as truck No. 72A by the Burlington and readily identified by the twin circular holes in the
lower part of the sideframe casting. And those trucks were painted the same color as the rest of the car: mineral red.
Hol
s everal questions on this topic-----were trucks painted car color s.p.[standard practice]-----what is the truck style on the two photographs as i think they are different---thanks

Greg:
No, the FW&D never had any ballast cars of this type; the only hopper-type ballast cars they ever had were all-steel and considerably shorter. Go with the CB&Q initials and number!
Hol
Louis,
Did the FW&D ever have any of these cars? I always like to add a little Texas to them, if possible. Sometimes it takes a bit of "creative licensing."
Thanks,
Greg

Greg - Excellent! Now that you've found the ballast car's original number, you can repaint it on the sides when finished restoring. I have two other images to share
with you. Attached are in-service images of CB&Q ballast hoppers downgraded to beet service Nos. 221574 and 221660, sisters to your car.
Don't worry about having first painted the car Chinese red. That color will be a good undercoat and preservative for when you put the final coat of mineral red on to
make the car look authentic. Please share some images of your restored ballast hopper with us when finished. Best Regards - Louis

All,
Attached is a Dead of Gift for the ballast car and some of our other CB&Q equipment. The car number was originally CB&Q 221674. Hope this helps narrow down the search.
Greg
Gentlemen,
Looking through my files I found an image (albeit poor) of the CB&Q car in question at the Texas State Railroad in Rusk, TX that I took in 1984
on a lousy rainy day. Unfortunately it’s horribly grainy and doesn’t offer much detail to the lettering questions since most of it is gone by this date, but I thought I’d offer it to the group in case it might help someone. I was hoping I could glean a car
number off it but as you can see on the upper car end it has been painted out, probably by the railroad prior to the sale to Southwest Car Parts. In a color photo I have showing it from a distance the color of the car looks like boxcar red.
Using my photo editing platform I was able to zoom in on the remaining lettering and here’s what I found: Starting at the far (A end) of the
car working towards us: “For Beet Loading Only” stencil, dimensional data stencil (two lines), more dimensional data stencil (two lines), “For Beet Loading Only” stencil, Repack Data BN (and unreadable location code), 8-17-70 second line, and wheel inspection
dot.
Hopefully Greg can find an official document to fill in all the other questions.
For what it’s worth I hope this helps!

I suspect that your photo was a company photo, taken at Havelock, of the first of the class. Just a slight discrepancy between the date of the photo and the construction date on the car.
Were the wood sides a wartime economy measure?

Greg - I can contribute the attached three-quarter side image of CB&Q 221500 taken in March 1943.
What is the original car number for the ballast hopper your group has restored? Best Regards - Louis
