According to a brief summary at http://www.encyclopedia.chicagohistory.org/pages/2788.html,
"National Malleable purchased the Latrobe Steel & Coupler Co.'s plant in Melrose Park, Illinois in 1909."

The 1909 Sanborn map of the Latrobe facility is attached.?? (That's the only one I found at the Library of Congress.)?? Google maps shows almost no trace remaining today.??

Rupert-

Tom is talking about a different National Malable plant than the Grant Works facility.

Proviso is considerably west and north of Cicero.

Tom

The Sanborn map from about 1950 shows a building at the north end of the plant labelled as scrap storage, with tracks going into the building.

You don???t by any chance take a photo of the switcher, do you?

My uncle, Victor Hammer was the Shipping Receiving Forman for National Mailable,?? Gondolas of Scrap Steal delivered CNW proviso yard was adjutant to the east end of the Proviso yard.??
Scrap was also delivered by the Harbor Belt from the East side of the Plant.?? When I visited my Uncle at work I was told not to even think of operating the Center cab Locomotive used for switching cars around the Plant yards.?? I think that the plant has ben closed now.
