There are tunnels on the Mopac west of St. Louis at Grays Summit and Labadie.  That load doesn't look excessively high in the photo, but no idea what the Mopac's tunnel clearances were like in 1936.

Yes, the locomotive in the photo is definitely a Santa Fe pacific type 4-6-2 no. 1374 and, I agree with Ed Pavlovic that the caboose is also Santa Fe. Furthermore, looking at the background of the photo it doesn’t look anything like Missouri. The hills are too rugged and the terrain looks more barren and desert like. I think is somewhere further west on the AT&SF, so they may have used more than one locomotive on the movement. For the record, CB&Q’s no. 1374 was a G-1 0-6-0 retired in November, 1931.

Moving this load on the Q from St. Louis to KC seems rather circuitous. It would seem that a better and more direct route would have been MoPac unless there were clearance issues.
