Keith - The large rear facing Mars light was indeed color red and would come on automatically when the 9900 went into emergency.  This would warn any following trains on either the same or paralleling track to stop at a safe distance in case the Pioneer Zephyr was derailed and fouling the adjacent main. It could also be manually activated by the train crew. Merry Christmas - Louis

The side lights should be red facing the rear. The larger light should also be red. The side ones should be lit, but the large one I'm to sure about, it may be lit only when stopped or when the brakes were applied.  Someone else might know about that.

I have a 3-car Pioneer Zephyr 9900.  On the rear of the third (last) car are two rear-facing side lights and a larger round centered light.  Could someone explain what was their purpose, what color LEDs I should use in them and when should they be illuminated?  Thank you.
