Joel,

The CB&Q’s 2-102s were class M-1 nos. 6000 -6004, class M-2 nos. 6100-6170 and
the USRA 2-10-2s class M-3 nos.6300-6309. These locomotives were built between
1912 and 1915 except for the USRA locomotives that were built in 1919. In the
1930s, 47 of the M-2s were updated and modernized and re classed as M-2As. Like
many other Q locomotives, the updated locomotives can be identified by the disc
driving wheel in the main driver position. The M-4 2-10-4s were nos. 6310-6327.
The first 12 were built in 1927 and the last six in 1929. They were what I
consider the first of Q’s modern era steam locomotives with larger fireboxes
and four wheel trailing trucks to support it. All of the M-4s were rebuilt in
the late 1930s for higher speed service at which time they were equipped with
the disc driver in the main driver position among other modifications. After
rebuild, they were reassigned from the coal fields of southern Illinois to
Lines West where they were placed in service between Lincoln and Denver in high
speed freight operation. They remained generally in that service until the
arrival of the EMD FT freight locomotives in late 1943 and 1944. At that time,
the M-4As were reassigned to the southern Illinois coal fields were they
remained in service until the late 1950s. They were, in my opinion, among the
most impressive locomotives on the Q. Unfortunately, none were preserved.
