New to the Q group,is the M4 a 2-10-2?? Best Blessing for Thanksgiving Joel On Tuesday, November 20, 2018 3:50 PM, Louis Zadnichek via Groups.Io <LZadnichek=aol.com@groups.io> wrote: November 20, 2018
Group - Occasionally, I come across an image rare and unique enough to draw special attention. The attached photograph is from Chuck Ziegler's amazing collection. It's the only one I've ever seen taken of a Class M-4 being overhauled into a Class M-4-A at West Burlington. The Corbin book lists the 6315 as having been converted in October 1939 and that matches the date Chuck had for the photograph.
The disassembly of the very dirty locomotive had just started. The running board over the ELESCO feed water pump had been removed, reverse linkage disconnected, main and following rods dropped and the tender (resting on at least one shop truck) disconnected. If you look closely at the main driver, you can just barely make out a spoke. During the overhaul, the main spoked driver was replaced with a disc driver.
I shared this image with Bill Barber who additionally noted that the rear sand dome had not yet been moved forward to between the front sand dome and the steam dome. Bill also commented that in later years 6315's road pilot was replaced with front footboards, as well as on the rear of the tender. The presence of a disc driver and repositioned sand domes will identify a Class M-4-A locomotive.
What a BIG job it must've been to disassemble a M-4, overhaul and reassemble it into an improved M-4-A locomotive. A very interesting image, indeed. Best Thanksgiving Regards - Louis
