Hi Tom,

I'm going to suggest you just look for one of the LMB brass versions of the #4960.  The price you're going to pay for the LMB brass model isn't going to be much different than that of a Broadway Limited or Bachmann USRA light 2-8-2.  Yes, it's not going to run as well out of the box as something new but the drivetrain on it is a quality drive that isn't any more complex than a Mantua drive.  Probably a lubrication of the rods and the felt on the motor bearings with light oil and some heavy oil for the gearbox and you'd be golden.  If the model has been taken care of it will outlive all of us probably.  Lots of the LMB models have already been painted and numbered for #4960 as well.  There are lots of LMB models out there as well and I'd guess at least 10 or so show up a year on eBay for sale.  Somebody in the BRHS probably has one for sale right now for that matter.

In terms of a brass model an LMB model is almost foolproof.  I also like the idea of using a USRA light Mikado to make a "fake" #4960.  If one moved the steam dome towards the sand dome you could approximate the look of an O1a along with dangling a Worthington Feedwater Heater off of the fireman's side of the locomotive.

I have hopes that Broadway Limited at some point might do O1as and we can finally begin to let our 50 year old (!!!) LMB 2-8-2s get some rest.
