Lyle and Tom,
Broadway Limited’s model of the heavy USRA mikado matches Q’s O-4 class, 5500 -
5514, but is somewhat heavier than the O-1As. As mentioned, the only models of
the Q’s O-1As that I am aware of are the early LMB model and the later and much
better Oriental Limited models. I have one LMB and two of the Orientals. Last
year, Sunset 3RD Rail came out with a beautiful model of the O-1As in O scale.
They were fairly expensive, but they were with the price that I paid for the
two of them. Sunset ads indicate that they still have some of the 4960 left in
stock.
There are a couple of plastic models of light USRA mikados 2-8-2s available
that could come close. The USRA locomotives were about 26000 lbs lighter than
an O-1A and, to my eye, the boiler of the USRA locomotives has more of a wagon
top to it. However, with some careful work moving the headlight to the top of
the boiler face, increasing the sand dome size, a new cab (an old Mantua cab
might due) and a revised tender, one might have a pretty good representation.
