Reviewing the home movie video, my best estimate of the various operations are
as follows:
The first four scenes (up to 1:36) are not 4000, but rather, I believe, 3003.
The scenes are probably at Dayton’s Bluff prior to it’s September 29, 1957 trip
from St. Paul to Winona. The spotting feature between the 3003 and the 4000, it
the steam dome cover. On the 3003, it is flat on top. On 4000, for some reason
in later years, a cover with a crown on it was applied. The four.
The next two scenes are definitely 4000. The first of the with the train
coupled to it maybe the Sept 2, 1956 trip in which 4000 powered the train from
Chicago to Aurora. From there, 4-6-0 637 took over with the help of GP7 235.
They pulled the trip to Streator, to Zearing and return to Aurora where 4000
took th train back to Chicago. The second scene, without a train, may be part
of the same trip, but I can’t identify the background. It is also possible that
it is Galesburg. The is a very brief shot of 637, but I can’t tell if it is
under steam or not.
The next three scenes between 2:12 and 3:31, are the first double header fan
trip with 2-10-4 6315 and 4-8-4 5632 on Sept. 6, 1959 between Chicago and
Galesburg. Due to the eccentric rod failure, it was the last run of 6315 and
maybe the last run of a Q 2-10-4.
The next scene between 3:31 and 4:10 of 5631 is at Savanna, IL on it’s only fan
trip on Oct.6, 1957. There was a side trip to Galena the was pulled by the GP7
seen in the background.
The next scene between 4:10 and 4:37 of 4000 at Galesburg is most likely a trip
on 7/1/1956 from Chicago and Galesburg via Barstow assuming that it is a fan
trip movement.
The next 11 scenes between 4:37 and 7:39 are the Sept 2, 1956 trip from Chicago
to Streator to Zearing and return which 4000 pulled from Chicago to Aurora and
return. No. 637 and GP7 235 pulled the trip the rest of the way. Note that the
first two cars are a heavy weight baggage and a vista dome,. They appear to be
the same cars as seen behind 4000 in it”s first scene. This was my first fan
trip.
The next scene between 7:39 and 8:23 is one of two double header trips with
4960 and 5632. The scene, of course, is outside Union Station, There were three
double header trips with these tow locomotives. The first was on 12/1 1961 from
Chicago to Galesburg and return. The next occurred on 4/1/1962 from Chicago to
Savanna ia Denrock with snow en route. The last double header was on 5/17/1964
from Chicago to Galesburg via Denrock. Take your pick. Because most of this
video seems to be early fan trips, I would guess the first of second double
header trip.
The next scenes between 8:32 and 10:16 of 4960 are shot in the Chicago suburbs
and is probably an early trip and may be it’s first trip on Dec. 28, 1958. One
clue is that 4960 does not have the cab signal box applied yet. That occurred a
little later.
The next several scenes between 10:16 and 12:12 are of the 6315 / 5632 double
header with a couple of the scenes that re repeats from earlier in the video.
The next scenes from 12:12 to 12:52, are repeats of earlier scenes in the video
of 5631 at Savanna.
The last scenes from 12:52 to the end, are at Hannibal and the Boy Scout trip
to that facility. The steam visible is an active 0-6-0 and a dead 2-10-2 6135.
The are several nice shots of FT/F2 three unit consist no. 155 as it leaves the
maintenance facility and then departs with its train. I can not identify the
last yard scenes in the video. Maybe someone else can.
