The KCZ must of been waiting for a meet at East Leavenworth. By
1939, Kansas City-Omaha passenger trains were no longer stopping
at East Leavenworth. The bus connection to Leavenworth was made at
Beverly (just to the north 2-3 miles or so) where the CGW (and
prior to World War II) the RI crossed to get to/from Leavenworth.
I'd also be curious if this detour movement was before or after
partial abandonment of the original Chicago-KC main between
Cameron and Birmingham. The track charts I have show that the
Cameron - Kearney section was removed in June 1962. A 1961
Hannibal Division Employee Timetable still shows a 50 mph speed
limit for a passenger trains on the old main line. This was not
much slower than the St. Joe - Brookfield portion which had a 60
mph speed limit for passenger trains. Overall though, I suspect it
was well before abandonment time due to the train being all
stainless steel equipment which was not the case from the later
half of 1950s on as the KCZ was not very successful and the
stainless equipment often drifted to other Zephyrs.

Thanks Charley..the detour
idea came to me when I was about through writing my post..Turned
out somebody else had beat me to it. The detour would have been
as I mentioned up to St. Joe and then east...
