Thread-topic: [CBQ] Ash Pit Car Service

In studying the ash car photo, I just realized that the GS-7 still has Andrews trucks. I’m painting three models today, and wondered if the Andrews trucks that replaced the original arch bar trucks were ever upgraded. In this case, obviously not. Since the photo predates 1954, I can be sure that putting Andrews trucks on my GS-7 gondolas is prototypically correct.

Brian - I've attached a undated color image of CB&Q gondola 75070 being used in cinder service.  It was taken at the Clyde roundhouse servicing area in the Cicero, IL, yards. The steel structure behind the gondola is a hoist and bucket apparatus for dumping cinders and ashes.

In the background is Class O-1-A No. 5101 in use at the time as a switch engine. The image was taken prior to 5101 being retired and sold for scrap in May 1954 near the end of the steam era on Lines East. Hope this image helps to answer your question. Best Regards - Louis

The Denver Public Library has three Otto Perry photos that I know of that show standard revenue steel gondolas at the C&S ash pit in the 7th Street yard. The photos are OP-6490 (FW&D gondola 2163), OP-6720 (C&S gondola 16353), OP-6459 (C&S gondola 16873 or maybe 16373).

I am wondering what kind car you would have found commonly servicing ash pits in the late steam era?  I am assuming it was a gon of some sort.  Would these be in MOW orange or in whatever paint scheme they had for regular service?  Any photos you could point me to would be also be appreciated.

Thank you,

Brian Durham
