Ash cars were old steel general service gondola cars that were painted boxcar red with white lettering. They were marked "ASH SERVICE" and "COMPANY SERVICE" and were numbered in the 213xxx series. Revenue service steel hopper cars, steel gondola cars and steel ballast cars were also used when needed.

I am wondering what kind car you would have found commonly servicing ash pits in the late steam era?  I am assuming it was a gon of some sort.  Would these be in MOW orange or in whatever paint scheme they had for regular service?  Any photos you could point me to would be also be appreciated.

Thank you,
