Thread-topic: [CBQ] Observation Cars Purchased from SP&S

I should probably note that the one major exception to the Q's non-use  of open platform obs cars was when the car was assigned to the train by Pullman, as it was in both the cases described by Pete -- 10-section lounge observation cars.

Sorry guys..I just can't help myself from a couple of..."loosely connected" items relating to Open Platform Obs cars.  My first experience was bout 1942 and traveling from Lincoln, NE to Sheridan WY with my grandfather riding Train 43, which, at that time carried an OP Obs car...I remember we had breakfast at Alliance and went back to said "Parlor Car" to ride leaving Alliance.  After we passed Belmont and "topped" the hill we went out on the platform and rode through the Belmont Tunnel...On the way back we didn't ride the OP out of Crawford because the engine would be working hard through the tunnel and there would be too much smoke, soot, and Gas..So my experience via that tunnel was just a "one way" downhill trip...Much later 1957 my GF and I made the same trip to attend the opening ceremonies of the Jim Gatchell Museum at Buffalo WY.  Jim was a personal friend of my GF...I think by that time the OP was gone from Tra in 43-42

Second instance was in either 1947 or 48 my GF and I rode the EXPOSITION FLYER, from Omaha to Denver.  After we left Brush and had our breakfast I got to go out on the platform and rode there until almost Denver.

Richard:

Glad to be of help.  The Q was a big proponent of enclosed end observation cars and in fact took delivery in 1909 of the first solarium observation cars, built for it by Pullman for Chicago-Denver service.  By 1934, with the first Zephyr about to enter service, the railroad would simply not operate open platform observation cars on its through trains, the few it had left being used strictly for special and excursion trains.  So the very first thing the company would have done on receiving these two cars from the SP&S was to enclose their rear platforms, a task undertaken by the shops at Aurora, Ill.  I have diagram sheets of the two cars in two different configurations if you are interested.

Hi Hol,

Thank you very much for the info. I'm working on a project documenting all SP&S passenger cars from womb to tomb and this really helps. So I'm assuming by the photos that soon after the cars arrived on the CB&Q that they removed the observation platform and turned it into a solarium sun room. Is that correct?
