According to "The Tragedy at Loomis Street Crossing" (which admittedly was much more concerned with the human toll than the equipment), the Mississippi was actually followed by NP 1376 on the Advance Flyer.  The 1376 was scheduled to be removed in Burlington, Iowa, and the passengers transferred to the Mark Twain Zephyr.  The dining car it destroyed was the Silver Inn.  For reference, NP 1376 and Mississippi were both over 169,000 pounds, while the Silver Inn was just under 116,000 lbs.
