Thread-topic: [CBQ] Re: Mineral Red Paint (was St. Francis Kansas Turntable and Engine House)

Hol:

Your remark about the condition of the paint on the St. Francis turntable, including the paint date, reminded me of the overall condition of Lines West steel bridges.

In the first part of my railroad career, I was fortunate to inspect many Lines West steel bridges, albeit it was either the Omaha or Denver Region of the BN by then.  I particularly remember the bridges on the Concordia Line, the Napier to Oxford line, and between Ravenna and Seneca, and west of Alliance.  Many of these bridges still had mill scale on the steel, and there was virtually no corrosion whatsoever on the steel, even if the paint was no longer protecting the steel.  Not so for bridges on Lines East, particularly floor systems of trusses subject to damage from salt brine.

John:

Here's a postcard image that should give you the relative positioning of the facilities at St. Francis.  As you may or may not be aware, the St. Francis turntable is in use today at the roundhouse of the Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden.  When received from BN, it still wore the coat of mineral red paint it had received when installed at St. Francis in 1927, complete with the stenciled date it was painted.

Thanks Glenn,

I do have one book on the Burlington and found a small picture of the turntable. By reference I could tell it was just south of the white tanks, still there, that is either a fuel or fertilizer dealer.  I went in Google Earth and found  the ties you mentioned.  Looks like he area of the turntable and engine house has become a junk pile.

John
