To expand on my response to Rupert below are a few specific examples I found of rider
Cars.

DATE.     TRAIN.   RIDER CAR.     LOCATION IN TRAIN.        COMMENTS
7/20/60.      29.        Q 1491.            3 from rear
3/17/61.       3.           Q 6306.          3 from rear/7 from H.E.
3/18/61.      7.            Q 4500.            Rear car.                       Train has a wheel car
12/15/61.     1st 29.    Q 2326.          5th from rear.                  See below
1/4/62.        7.             Q 4540.           Rear car.
8/9/62.        14.           Q 1491.             Head car.                       Waycar 13953 on rear
9/62.            29.           Q 1430.                                                     See below

All these trains consisted of baggage,RPOs,etc except the rider cars.
On #29 the cars behind the rider were in inverse station order so the rear car could simply be cutoff at Galesburg,Ottumwa,Creston, etc.
The wheel car #7 was Q 21482.

Record doesn't say if the waycar on #14 was dead heading or from where. In those days of assigned waycars deadheads caused crew handling issues. Especially if a crew was deadhead westbound to Savanna. The crew would generally ride a passenger train from Aurora to Savanna and have 13-14 hours left to work back on split rest if needed. But
Their waycar may not be into Savanna in time for the eastbound trip.
There were also internal arguments as to when the deadhead crew goes back into the first in/first out rotation when they deadhead in either direction w/o their waycar.

Rupert,

It could be any piece of passenger equipment with seats for the train crew. Based on other files I'm reading it is stated with much emphasis by mgmt. that only in emergency would a waycar be  attached to any express, mail, berry, silk or passenger train.

When you refer to "rider cars", were you meaning the waycars, or baggage
cars with the rider compartment or others?

As a note, the entire train crew would normally be in the "rider" car on
mail and express trains.
