Just a comment on the "recognizability" of the herald: years ago
my in-laws purchased a railroad painting for me because they knew of my
interest. It depicted a couple of steam locomotives (which I knew little
about at the time), but one quick glance at the tender and I knew "That's my
railroad!" They had no idea when they bought it. Happy
coincidence!

Last year, Nolen Null provided a link to the old Official

those of you who didn't bookmark it:
The first appearance of the familiar square herald that I could find
was in the B&MR listing in the Oct-Dec 1888 Official Guide.
Earlier Guides promote the "Burlington Route" and before that the "Great
Burlington Route".

The
advert with the ?herald? appeared in the Railway Age in 1879 and the
stylised logo in an advert in the Railway Review in 1881.
Do you
know if the attached design ?Herald old? was an official herald? If
so, any idea of a date?

Here's an 1885
piece that shows that "Burlington Route" was regularly being used before
the advent of the herald later that same
year.
