I'd be interested in that history. When you posted this message, I was about to make the following comment, based on the wonderful collection of materials just shared, in particular:

  • the Great Burlington Route encompassing the CB&Q, H&SJ in an 1884 Mexican timetable
  • Croffut's guide (1870) the Burlington Route defined as the combination of CB&Q and the B&MR
  • the 1885 trading card with a distinction between the "Burlington Route" (CB&Q) and the "Iowa Route" (BCR&N)
  • Ken's booklet from 1881/2 showing th Great Burlington Route crossing the river at Burlington, IA.

What all these bring to mind is that in the mid-19th century, the great barriers for railroads to cross were not mountain ranges but rivers. Bridging the Mississippi and Missouri were really big deals. As these ads and timetables suggest, the Burlington Route (the route via Burlington) was being touted as the superior line between Chicago, the nation's great Division Point, and the great western railroads (or as they later would say, everywhere west).
