Last year, Nolen Null provided a link to the old Official Guides in the Stanford University library.  Here's the link again for those of you who didn't bookmark it:

The first appearance of the familiar square herald that I could find was in the B&MR listing in the Oct-Dec 1888 Official Guide.  Earlier Guides promote the "Burlington Route" and before that the "Great Burlington Route".

The advert with the “herald” appeared in the Railway Age in 1879 and the stylised logo in an advert in the Railway Review in 1881.

Do you know if the attached design “Herald old” was an official herald?  If so, any idea of a date?

Here's an 1885 piece that shows that "Burlington Route" was regularly being used before the advent of the herald later that same year.
